Schoolhouse Bay Wharf Maintenance

Renewal work on the Schoolhouse Bay Wharf is scheduled to start in early September 2025, with some preparatory work starting the last week of August. The wharf is expected to be inaccessible for 2-3 months whilst the work is undertaken. Residents will be able to use the Wagstaff Wharf for pick-up and drop-off of small goods, mail and groceries. Wagstaff Wharf is only to be used for pick-up and drop-off, after which your boat must be tied up elsewhere at a mooring, along the public wharf, or on the beach.

Refer to the information below from Auckland Transport:

Start date:

First week of September

Access:

Please note Schoolhouse Bay Wharf will be inaccessible during the duration of the work.

Duration:

2-3 months

Alternative route:

Residents will be able to use the Wagstaff Wharf for pick-up and drop-off of small goods, mail and groceries. Signage will be in place to inform residents and visitors of diversion routes. Wagstaff Wharf is only to be used for pick-up and drop-off, after which your boat must be tied up elsewhere at a mooring, along the public wharf, or on the beach. We kindly ask residents to plan their travel accordingly.

Emergency information:

Contractors will be available to help in the event of any emergencies on the island.

Maintenance at Schoolhouse Bay Wharf includes:

 Replace 6 wooden vertical support piles and wharf structure under the shed.

 Remove and replace the shed

 Remove and replace all decking on the wharf

 Add an extended wharf head corner next to the shed

 Wrapping piles and replacing cross-bracing at the Helicopter pad

Shed Removal

The shed at the wharf head will be removed during the works. Residents are encouraged to collect any items from the shed by Friday 29 August 2025. Any remaining items will be kept in boxes for the duration of construction.

Docking Restrictions

Docking of vessels at the Schoolhouse Bay wharf head and pontoon is not permitted during construction. The public pontoon should not be used for drop-offs and pick-ups due to the major refurbishment of the wharf head and heavy equipment working nearby. We request that residents use the designated ropes along the wharf for tying up their vessels, utilise a mooring, or use the beach whenever possible.

Health and Safety

For health and safety reasons, boats must not be left at the pontoon under any circumstances. There will be barges and workboats at the end of the wharf that pose a hazard. While Auckland Transport is not responsible for providing all-day docking areas for the public, we acknowledge the concerns raised during the on-site drop-in session about users leaving their vessels tied to the pontoon daily.

Update 25/8/25 - On 25 August, the contractor STF will mobilise and establish the work site at School House Bay Wharf.

The wharf will be closed from 1 September as they rebuild the wharf head, complete structural repairs, and replace the decking and do works underneath the wharf (in particular at the Helipad).

From 1 September, you can expect to see crews start dismantling the shed and wharf head. This is required in order to replace piles, bearers and bracing under the wharf. Please ensure that you collect your belongings from the shed ahead of 1 September. The remaining items will be stored in a secure box until the shed is reinstated at the end of the project.

Due to the nature of the works, the wharf will be inaccessible for the duration of the work. If access is required in emergencies, please contact the site supervisor.

Update 29/8/25 - Last week, site mobilisation and setup were completed at Schoolhouse Bay, along with the initial site measurement and survey, and decking replacement began from the abutment end. This week, decking replacement will continue and a piling barge will be mobilised to commence wharf head works. Please take extra care around the wharf area.

Update 16/9/25 - Last week, crews replaced decking and removed the shed and wharf head for piling work. This week, decking replacement continues, materials arrive on site, and piling begins at the wharf head. Please take extra care around the wharf area and do not moor onto Schoolhouse Bay wharf. Use the adjacent Wagstaff wharf instead to load/unload and moor at your designated mooring. Mail and parcels are being delivered into the shed at the end of the Wagstaff wharf for collection.

Update 22/9/25 - Last week, the team replaced decking up to and around the helipad - work has now begun on the opposite side.

Decking replacement will continue this week along with the start of wheel stop installation. Materials are on site and piling at the wharf head will begin soon.

Update 29/9/25 - The replacement of the decking is progressing well and is now halfway between the helipad area and the wharf head. This week, decking replacement will keep progressing and wheel stops installation is to continue.

More materials will be delivered to site and work on the piles will continue at the wharf head with sleeving, trimming to height and installation of pile caps.

As usual, please take care around the wharf area: don't moor onto the wharf (keep using the adjacent Wagstaff wharf to load/unload. Moor at your designated mooring please).

Mail and parcels are delivered into the shed at the end of the Wagstaff wharf for collection.

Update 9/10/25 - Due to improved shelter at this location, the team has made considerable progress this week. The replacement of the decking is advancing effectively and is nearing the wharf head.

In the upcoming week, the decking replacement will continue towards the wharf head, alongside ongoing trimming, and installation of wheel stops. Additional materials are scheduled for delivery to the site, while work on the piles has been concluded with trimming to height, grouting, and the installation of pile caps now complete.

Pending favourable weather conditions, the site team will undertake helipad deck and support pile works in a focused and efficient manner next week.

As usual, please exercise caution around the wharf area: refrain from mooring onto the wharf and continue utilising the adjacent Wagstaff wharf for loading and unloading operations. Please moor at your designated location. Mail and parcels will continue to be delivered to the shed at the end of the Wagstaff wharf for collection.

Update 14/10/25 - Despite weather-related delays last week, work is progressing at School House Bay Wharf. Replacement of the decking is nearing the wharf head, where piles have been installed and sleeved. This week, the team intends to begin grouting and capping, continue deck construction on the wharf head, install wheel stops, and, depending on conditions, start work on the helipad deck and its support piles.

As always please take care around the wharf area.

  • Don't moor onto to School House Bay Wharf.

  • Continue to use Wagstaff wharf to load/unload and moor at your designated mooring.

  • Mail and parcels are delivered into the shed at the end of the Wagstaff wharf for collection.

Update 20/10/25 - The contractor had a good week at Schoolhouse Bay, with works progressing well despite challenging weather conditions. Replacement of the decking is moving steadily and has now reached the wharf head.

The wharf head piles have been installed, sleeved, grouted, and capped, and deck replacement will continue to and on the wharf head. Wheel stops will also be installed.

This week, weather permitting, the site team will tackle the helipad deck and support pile works.

As per normal, please take care around the wharf area: don't moor onto the wharf (keep using the adjacent Wagstaff wharf to load/unload. Moor at your designated mooring please). Mail and parcels are delivered into the shed at the end of the Wagstaff wharf for collection.

Update 29/10/25 - At Schoolhouse Bay, decking replacement is underway and will continue onto the wharf head. Bearers are in place, joists have been set, and the wharf edge has been trimmed to the helipad. Installation of wheel stops has begun. This week, the team will secure joists at the wharf head and proceed with decking and wheel stop installation. As per normal, please take care around the wharf area: don't moor onto the wharf (keep using the adjacent Wagstaff wharf to load/unload. Moor at your designated mooring please). Mail and parcels are delivered into the shed at the end of the Wagstaff wharf for collection.

Update 4/11/25 - Decking installation is currently underway at the Wharf Head. Wheel stops are also being installed. The helideck will be replaced this week, along with associated under-wharf work such as pile wrapping and bracing upgrades. Please continue to exercise caution in the wharf area and refrain from mooring at the wharf. The adjacent Wagstaff wharf should be used for loading and unloading, and vessels should moor at their designated locations. Mail and parcels are delivered to the shed at the end of Wagstaff wharf for collection.
